Protecting cultural heritage in conflict ridden areas
One of the most important roles of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is preserving cultural diversity and protecting key cultural and natural sites and artefacts. It does so mostly through the implementation of UNESCO World Heritage programme, which aims at protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. The World Heritage Committee lists war and terrorism as some of the primary factors affecting the Outstanding Universal Value of World Heritage properties. In the recent years 31 properties included on the UNESCO World Heritage List have been negatively affected by war; a vast majority of them located on the Arab Peninsula and in Africa. This poses the question, what actions could UNESCO undertake in order to ensure safety of the World Heritage sites in conflict ridden area more efficiently?
